This is one of the very first custom pieces that I ever made for a client.

She had several pieces of heirloom jewelry that contained large diamonds and wanted to make use of them. She is a very earthy person, so I knew that we would need this piece to be something that was not only brilliant, but also reflective of her personality (no pun intended).

In total she had 9 diamonds and 2 sapphires. We set the sapphires into matching earrings, and collaborated together designing a ring that would hold 3 large diamonds (almost a carat a piece) and the 6 smaller stones.

I found pictures in magazines and manufacturer’s catalogs with different finishes and designs, and we looked through them together to see what she was drawn to. Anything that she liked I found in an actual jewelry piece so she could see what it looked like in person. I sketched out 7 different designs that used the stones, including options with amber and diamonds, and even a bracelet.

In the end, we decided on the finished product. It was cast out of solid 18 karat gold, and the ring itself weighs almost 25 grams.

It started off being named the “rocky road ring”, since the diamonds looked like chocolate chips and nuts in rocky road ice cream, but I think she’s decided it reminds her more of a constellation of stars and for the time being, it’s “cosmic”.
